In the summer of 2017, Hia reached out to the institute and began as an assistant on the digital media and marketing committee. She did so after learning of the Gandhi Institute from a fellow student at the University of Rochester, who had participated in the Gandhi Service Fellowship. As a Rochester native, Hia had volunteered extensively with Mary’s Place Outreach for Refugees when she was in high school, but couldn’t continue when she began college. After learning about the Institute, she was thrilled to be promoting peace and healing once again. Currently, Hia sits on the finance committee and is also a student trustee. She is pursuing a B.S. in neuroscience at the University of Rochester, and she is also interested in social psychology. Provided that academics don’t consume her. Furthermore, Hia is a member of Sihir Bellydance Ensemble and UR SEGway (Survivor Empowerment Group). In addition, she mentors female underclassmen majoring in neuroscience, and she is committed to promoting women in STEM.
