SUMMARY:Winter Nonviolence Intensive 2019
DESCRIPTION:*Please note our location change* – the Intensive will take place at our site\, the Gandhi Institute (929 S Plymouth Avenue\, 14608).\n  \nWe are excited to announce our four-day Winter Nonviolence Intensive! This Intensive will discuss various forms of applied nonviolence\, with time to practice using these techniques for real life situations. These forms of nonviolence are proactive ways to manage conflict and challenging situations. \nDuring the workshop\, participants will learn:\n• how to shift conflicts by listening for underlying values of opposing parties\,\n• how to navigate the world with self-reflection upon one’s rank and privilege\,\n• how to reconnect to energy for social change\, in spite of personal and societal challenges and feelings of burn out\, and\n• how to mediate personal conflicts using Restorative Questions \nThis Intensive will be interactive with a focus on group-based learning. Each day will begin at 10am and conclude at 5pm. \nWe are also grateful for our partnership with Rochester AmeriCorps for the fifth year with this event. \nThis workshop has been priced on a sliding scale from $250-$500; free for students and no one turned away for lack of funds.

SUMMARY:The Witness to Injustice / KAIROS Blanket Exercise with Neighbors of the Onondaga Nation (NOON)
DESCRIPTION:This event has reached the maximum participant capacity\, we apologize to those who will not be able to join us this time.\nThrough the use of meaningful quotes and blankets that represent part of Turtle Island (the Western Hemisphere)\, we explore this shared history that non-native people rarely learn in school or other settings. The Exercise helps participants deepen their understanding about the European colonization of Turtle Island and the denial of Indigenous peoples’ nationhood throughout U.S. history up to present time. \nAfter the Witness to Injustice / KAIROS Blanket Exercise\, participants have the opportunity to share with the group what they learned\, felt\, etc\, and resources are shared by facilitators to help participants continue to learn more. Join facilitators from Neighbors of the Onondaga Nation (NOON)\, and the Gandhi Institute as we participate in learning and dialogue through this exercise. \nThanks to our co-sponsors at:  Friends of Ganondagan\, The Indigenous Peoples’ Day Planning Committee of Rochester\, The Pachamama Alliance\, and Showing Up For Racial Justice Rochester Chapter (SURJ ROC) \n***NOTE: The event location has changed. The correct location is listed at the top of this page. \nQuestions? Contact Kit at kitmiller@gandhiinstitute.org \nThis event has reached the maximum participant capacity\, we apologize to those who will not be able to join us this time.

SUMMARY:Conflict in the Comments: 90 Minute Online Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Relationships are being created\, nourished and sometimes destroyed in online spaces. Are there ways to nourish authentic dialogue and conflict resolution when things get ‘hot’ online? How can we deal with trolls – or friends and relatives acting like trolls – and get through heated arguments to meaningful communication?\nJoin Rivera Sun and Dominic Barter to explore these questions and emergent best practices for an online conversation\, moderated by Kit Miller and hosted by Molly Rowan Leach. These online skills can also translate into a toolbox that we can use in the street or around the dinner table to shift from fighting to opening hearts and minds. \nThis event is a benefit to support Nonviolence Now\, a global media project dedicated to introducing nonviolence to the planet’s 7 billion residents. \nHost:\nMolly Rowan Leach hosts and produces Restorative Justice on The Rise\, a creative-commons advocacy\, education and narrative-tipping platform that has captured the global restorative justice movement’s growth since 2011. Her written works have appeared at TruthOut\, Daily Good\, HuffPost\, and Democracy Now. \nModerator:\nKit Miller serves as director of the MK Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence in Rochester\, NY and facilitates the Nonviolence Now project team. She teaches and works on projects related to restorative justice and anti-racism as applications of nonviolence in Rochester. \nAwesome guests:\nRivera Sun is the author of The Dandelion Insurrection and other novels and essays. She is a trainer in strategy for nonviolent movements and has been a social media for social change coordinator for Campaign Nonviolence\, Metta Center for Nonviolence\, and others. \nDominic Barter designs social systems that promote dialogue\, empathy\, innovation and partnership. Over 23 years his work has been applied in 48 countries. He is part of ‘Redes Cordiais’\, which brings together social media influencers from opposing political tendencies. \nSliding scale to participate is 0-$25.
