Picture of Mohammad (Yasser) Abdelshafy

Mohammad (Yasser) Abdelshafy

Yasser is an energy engineer and aspiring policy researcher, currently working on his PhD in mechanical engineering at the University of Rochester. As an energy engineer, he actively seeks ways to reduce environmental impact, promote renewable energy, and enhance energy efficiency, all while ensuring equitable access. His first projects involved upgrades to the power grid to increase access to energy and minimize losses on transmission lines.

He is passionate about sustainability and combatting climate change. Originally from Egypt, he has witnessed the devastating effects of climate change, especially the increase and worsening of heat waves in the global South.

Yasser actively participates in community development initiatives: he is a tutor at the RCSD and teaches at the Upward Bound program. He understands the importance of education for youth given the important role they play and tries to pave the way for rising generations.

We acknowledge the land on which we gather is the treaty territory of the Haudenosaunee Peoples.
